What causes your hair to thin?

Thinning hair is different to hair loss in that it does not always result in entire baldness, however, it results in thinner spots of hair. It may be caused by lifestyle, habits, genetics or both. Below are four day-to-day things which may cause thinning of hair which you may be able to control:

  • Hair Treatments: This includes color treatments, perms, relaxers as well as other products such as extreme-hold hairsprays and gels.
  • Certain Hairstyles: Wearing your hair in styles which are too tight against the scalp. This may pull the hair and break it from the follicles.
  • Deficiencies of Certain Vitamins: Deficiency of vitamins such as iron, folic acid as well as other minerals can cause thinning of hair as all these vitamins and minerals help follicles produce hair naturally.
  • Uncontrolled Stress: Stress may cause certain hormone levels to change and excessive stress hormones can kill off new hairs.

Medical reasons for loss of Hair

  • Recently having had a baby
  • Stopping birth control pills
  • Going through hormonal changes
  • Loss of weight in a short period of time
  • Immune system deficiencies
